Zero Waste Week, September 6-10, 2021, is a week-long campaign, raising awareness about the environmental impact of waste. According to the United Nations, it is estimated that 10% of people in the world do not have access to proper nutrition. There is enough food in the world to feed everyone, so why are there still people starving? Food wastage includes both food loss and food waste. Waste is not only morally irresponsible, but also causes huge economic losses and severe damage to the world we call home. Concerns are rapidly rising about food security and environmental impacts, which include greenhouse gas emissions attributed to food waste and resource depletion. As the world population continues to escalate, hunger will sadly increase as well. By using Save Foods products, the future could be dramatically improved with less waste and environmental damage and more nutrition.

Companies fighting food waste are quickly growing due to their unique technologies and innovative ideas. Here are a few of the inventive companies that are driven to ending  waste of food, worldwide.

Winnow Solutions – United Kingdom

Restaurants are not utilizing data collection to properly account for food waste. Without this basic data to analyze, establishments are only enabled to estimate how to reduce waste. Winnow Solutions uses up and coming AI technology to empower employers and employees to monitor  waste, cut costs, save time, and run more profitable and sustainable kitchens.

Winnow uses “Vision,” a platform that includes a weighing scale and an AI camera equipped with computer vision algorithms to record the weight and type of food thrown to the trash. An employee then selects an option from a touchscreen to indicate the reason for the waste. Winnow has the potential to cut food establishments’ food waste in half!

Save Foods – Israel

Save Foods is a cutting-edge company, dedicated to delivering integrated natural solutions for improved safety, freshness, and quality to the food system. The goal of Save Foods is to ensure that produce is protected, the entire journey, from field to fork. Save Foods has developed  new solutions that preserve produce, prevent food-borne illnesses and greatly reduce and may even eliminate the use of the hazardous chemicals commonly used. Save Foods products do not leave residues of toxicological concerns to the consumer or the environment. Save Foods products are based on a proprietary blend of food acids. The fruit and vegetable wash is odorless and does not irritate the eyes, skin, or airways.

Goodr – United States

Goodr redirects surplus food from businesses to nonprofits that share it with those in need. Many restaurants, catering, and event companies often end up with plenty of leftovers, but don’t have the resources to get the food to those who are food insecure in time. Goodr solves that through an app that allows its clients to signal that there’s a surplus ready to get picked up. The company provides its own packaging and transport for the extra foods. Goodr keeps track of the transactions using blockchain, resulting in a digital ledger that shows food providers who received the goods. Goodr also tracks the weight of each delivery to estimate each participant’s environmental impact against waste!

As the world turns, and we find ourselves in a state of climate emergency, now is more important than ever to reduce our carbon footprint, reduce waste, and protect our planet and its people. Hats off to these companies and all the innovative agritech that is beneficial to a better world!
