For almost a decade, Jiang Hui has been on a quest for answers surrounding the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which carried his 70-year-old mother. As the Chinese court begins hearings on compensation claims by families of MH370 passengers, Jiang and others seek not only closure on their loved ones’ fate but also financial relief.

Jiang’s mother, Jiang Cuiyun, was one of 239 passengers on the flight that vanished over the Indian Ocean on March 8, 2014. The fate of MH370 remains one of aviation’s greatest mysteries. Families, including about 40 Chinese families, are taking legal action against Malaysia Airlines, its insurer, Boeing, and the plane’s engine manufacturer.

Jiang is pursuing compensation, a formal apology, psychological assistance for family members, and the creation of a fund for continued search efforts. His demands align with Chinese law regarding transportation damage. Over 153 Chinese nationals were among the 200+ people on the flight.

The hearings, scheduled until December 5, will address the families’ appeals, which largely overlap. Boeing expressed condolences, while Malaysia Airlines, Allianz, and Rolls-Royce are yet to comment. Legal uncertainties surround the court’s enforcement power, given the international status of the defendants.

Similar cases in the United States were dismissed, citing Malaysian legal system jurisdiction. In Malaysia, settlements were reached with some families, but nearly 40 families refused, as the agreement absolved the airline and government of responsibility.

The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated matters, with economic struggles leading some families to settle. Despite settlement challenges, approximately 40 families persist in their pursuit, emphasizing the shared goal of finding the plane and their loved ones.

The Malaysian authorities’ 2018 report on MH370’s disappearance cited human interference or error as probable causes. Lacking conclusive evidence, various theories emerged. Jiang, driven by filial piety to his mother, abandoned his career to dedicate himself to the search.

His persistent efforts include visits to search teams in Australia and exploration of remote shores in pursuit of debris. Regular gatherings with other victims’ families in Beijing showcase their shared commitment to uncovering the truth.

For Jiang, the quest transcends personal sacrifices and professional pursuits, symbolizing a profound understanding of life’s meaning and its most precious elements. He remains resolute, seeking progress in finding MH370 and finding fulfillment beyond monetary rewards.
