Apple has declared upcoming changes to its iOS, Safari browser, and the App Store within the European Union (EU) to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The alterations, set to roll out with the iOS 17.4 update in March, will grant iPhone users in the EU the ability to utilize third-party app marketplaces, select an alternative default browser, and opt for payment methods other than Apple’s for in-app purchases. These modifications will only apply to the 27 EU member countries. Here’s a summary of the adjustments coming to the Apple iPhone platform:
Alternative App Marketplaces:
Users in the EU can install apps from third-party app stores termed “alternative app marketplaces.”
Developers managing these marketplaces must adhere to Apple’s “Notarization” requirements to ensure app security.
Users can manage allowed app stores and installed apps from settings.
Default Web Browser Choice:
Users in the EU can now select a default web browser other than Safari.
A new choice page on Safari will prompt users to pick their default browser after installing the iOS 17.4 update.
Developers must meet specific criteria and commit to privacy and security requirements to implement alternative browser engines.
Contactless Payment Transactions:
Third-party banking and wallet apps can access contactless payment transaction methods on iOS.
Users can initiate payment transactions from authorized banking or wallet apps at compatible NFC terminals.
Users can manage their default contactless payment app through a new setting.
Alternative Payments on the App Store:
The App Store will support alternative payment service providers for developers in the EU.
Developers can choose two additional payment processing options, including Payment Service Providers (PSPs) or redirecting users to an external webpage for transactions.
Apps with alternative payment options will display an informational banner on the App Store.
Developers opting for PSPs or link-out to purchase will pay a commission to Apple.
These changes align with the DMA and aim to enhance user choice and competition within the Apple ecosystem.
