Thailand is gearing up for a transformative upgrade to its railway infrastructure with a significant investment of 8.8 billion USD (300 billion THB) slated for next year. The ambitious second phase of the railway expansion includes six major double-track rail projects aimed at boosting connectivity and enhancing the country’s transportation efficiency.
Planned Railway Routes
The six targeted routes cover a total of 1,312 kilometers across the country:
- Pak Nam Pho to Den Chai – 281 km
- Chira Junction to Ubon Ratchathani – 308 km
- Hat Yai to Padang Besar – 45 km
- Chumphon to Surat Thani – 168 km
- Surat Thani to Hat Yai to Songkhla – 321 km
- Den Chai to Chiang Mai – 189 km
Currently, these projects have successfully cleared the Budget Bureau’s review and are awaiting a final assessment by the Finance Ministry and the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC). Thai Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has expressed confidence that both agencies will deliver their feedback by the end of the month. Following this, the cabinet is expected to grant final approval by January 2025.
Bangkok-Nong Khai High-Speed Rail Progress
Alongside the double-track rail projects, Thailand is pushing forward with the next phase of its high-speed railway network. The Bangkok-Nong Khai route, stretching 357 kilometers and valued at 341 billion THB, is currently undergoing review by the Finance Ministry and NESDC. Officials anticipate the review to conclude in the next two months, with bidding expected to commence later in the year.
Ongoing Developments in the Northeast
In parallel, construction of the Khon Kaen-Nong Khai double-track railway in northeastern Thailand has made significant progress. A 28.7-billion-THB contract was recently signed between the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), led by Governor Veeris Ammarapala, and a joint venture between CHO Thavee-AS Construction. The project, which will see the addition of a parallel track spanning 167 kilometers, is projected for completion by 2028.
A Step Towards Modernized Transport
This sweeping expansion is part of Thailand’s broader effort to modernize its rail systems, reduce congestion, and support economic growth. The upgrades will not only improve domestic travel but also enhance trade and connectivity with neighboring countries, particularly along routes linking southern Thailand to Malaysia.
With billions earmarked for development and bidding processes set to kick off next year, Thailand’s railway overhaul marks a crucial step towards a more connected and efficient transport network.
