Fulton County, GA -Two officers were released on bail after a long and arduous case involving the killing of an African-American man named Rayshard Brooks who had been shot in the parking lot of a restaurant last month.
Rayshard Brooks was shot while fleeing Officer Garret Rolfe and his partner following his failing a sobriety test and physically assaulting Officer Rolfe and snatching his taser gun while aiming to use it on the chasing officer.
Footage showed that the officers were taken by surprise as Rayshard Brooks punched Mr. Rolfe upon failing the sobriety test then attempting to run away while aiming the stolen taser on the assaulted officer before being shot down by Officer Rolfe.
A judge set the bail at $500,000 which was paid setting Garett Rolfe free who also faces 11 charges including the murder of 27-year old Rayshard Brooks on 12 June.
The Black Lives Matter movement was put against the ropes when more details of the cases were revealed however Tomika Miller, Mr Brooks’ widow was present at the hearing for the bond via video and had stated her views on the matter.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Jane Barwick heard as Rayshard’s widow spoke through tears stating that Officer Rolfe has already shown he’s a danger to the community.
“My husband did not deserve to die, and I should not live in fear while waiting for the man who killed my husband to be tried in court.” stated Tomika Miller on having to find out Officer Garret was free on bail.
According to her accounts, Rayshard Brooks was a loving father who was killed on their daughter’s birthday, 24 hours before their anniversary.”
Judge Barwick, commended Ms. Miller on her courage and bravery but stated that Officer Rolfe did not pose a threat to the community .
The police body cameras revealed that Mr Brooks was complying with the officers for over 40 minutes before he fought to break free and struck Officer Rolfe, who was called to the scene earlier by a Wendy’s employee who stated a drunk man had parked in the customer area and refused to move.
Rayshard’s girlfriend who upon his arrest that night, tried to burn Wendy’s down was tried in court.
Natalie White, the culprit, was placed under house arrest on $10,000 bail.
